Opening it’s doors in February of 1953, Cafe Pizzaria was Bloomington’s first pizzeria. The menu consisted only of pizza, but their signature Hot Submarines and Strombolis were quickly added to the list of delicious menu items. Originally named “The Pizzaria” the name was changed to “Cafe Pizzaria” in the late-sixties.

Cafe Pizzaria featured a full-service Mexican menu, “La Tortilla,” from 1967–71. A Spanish dungeon theme was used to decorate the back room of the restaurant, including: rod iron light fixtures, giant distressed beams on the ceiling, and whiskey barrels and kegs used as tables and chairs. Remnants of this decor remain in the restaurant. A second kitchen was added to prepare the Mexican food, now used to prepare our grilled sandwiches and burgers.

When Cafe Pizzaria served Bloomington its first taste of pizza, we’ve been continuing with our original plan for success, the finest ingredients, prepared fresh and served in our special way.

Cafe Pizzaria’s pizza dough is made from scratch and hand-rolled daily. The recipe is a family secret that has has been used since the restaurant opened in 1953.

We have always prided ourselves in using only the freshest ingredients:

* Vegetables are cleaned and hand-cut daily.
* Cafe Pizzaria’s burgers are made with beef from Fischer Farms. Fischer Farms Natural Beef is hormone free and antibiotic free.
* The pizza sauce is made using our own secret recipe, which has remained the same for more than 40 years.

We invite you to taste the difference that our years of experience have made!
